2009 --Television I Loved

The truth is there's not a lot of television I actually watched in 2009 that's worth talking about with the exception of LOST, my discovery of Supernatural, and Vampire Diaries.

Let's start with LOST. Admittedly, season 5 was not my favorite. I thought it was excellent, but there were times I thought the writing almost rushed plot lines along too much -- to the point of more telling than showing. There is one episode I thought was beautifully written, though, and I probably watched it..well never mind how many times I watched it.

It's no secret that I was a Sawyer and Juliet fan and so the episode I loved is LeFleur. I just thought it was beautifully and thematically written and developed. After 4+ seasons of watching an angsty Sawyer pine after an unstable Kate, it was lovely to see the flower of true love bloom. (please sigh with me in bliss) I love everything about how their relationship unfolded on screen in this episode, I love that the deep trust that existed between them (until later on when the devil Kate comes back) began with the first steps of simply being there for each other. I love the scene when they're at the dock and Sawyer asks Juliet to stay. "Who's going to get my back?" and Juliet looks at him and realizes what he's asking. The acting is phenomenal. (I <3 Elizabeth Mitchell!!) I love that they believe in each other in the "present" scene we're shown. This relationship was a very rare thing on television...a happy mature, stable couple that brought out the best in each other. Even up to the last minutes of the show where we're shown Sawyer and Juliet spooning in bed, a sweet glimpse into the intimacy they shared. Gorgeously written, beautifully acted, one of the finest character pieces of the season. Lefleur how sweet the flower of love is and how easily crushed...Team Darlton I hate you just a little bit for the season finale.

Anyway, I guess I'm just a big softy romantic at heart. I enjoyed the season, I'm looking forward to the last season (while also sort of dreading it being over) and I'm sure the blog will be covered in LOST soon.

I also watched Supernatural for the first time this year. I LOVED the first three seasons of this show but it started to fall apart a little bit for me with the introduction of angels in the fourth season. And the fifth season needs to change directions fast. I'm NOT happy with all the meta crap...it's like the writers are having fun with all their little inside jokes but it's doing serious damage to the integrity of their story. Additionally, I'm not thrilled that everything is falling into line with the angels vs. demons storyline. I didn't need the Trickster to be some high powered angel...and I sincerely hope that little trick doesn't get pulled again. I just want to watch my favorite brothers battle monsters...is that too much to ask? Having said that I do highly recommend the first three seasons...they are mad crazy addictive.

Lastly, I'm loving Vampire Diaries! While very different from the books it's still lots of good fun and the rich mythology developing is keeping me interested.

Honorable Mentions are of course, The Closer and V. I'm behind on Mad Men so it's not on here and while I love Chuck and Blair, Gossip Girl is also losing steam.

Tube Talk: Supernatural 3.9, 3.10

Every week Elizabeth and I chat about a few episodes of Supernatural. Next week we're taking a little break, but I'll try to report about the Supernatural panel at Comic-Con instead!



Episode 9: Malleus Malificarum
Synopsis: Sam and Dean travel to Sturbridge, Massachusetts, and discover a coven of witches that has killed two people.

Amy: This episode was pretty hard to watch for me. The teeth coming out was just absolutely terrible. GROSS.
Elizabeth: I have dreams like that!!! Okay, now I'm freaked out.
Amy: So...witches. I take it Dean really doesn't like witches!
Elizabeth: Right - "spewing their bodily fluids everywhere..." It's like he takes personal offense to them for some reason,.
Amy: The worst part was the meat with the maggots all over it and then the guy's burger turned into that. Seriously, that just grossed me out SO MUCH.
Elizabeth: That part kinda just reminded me of something Andrew Zimmerin would eat on Bizarre Foods, so it honestly didn't bother me that much. Amy: I think I might have been eating at the time.
Amy: Did you realize witchcraft was being performed on Amanda?
Elizabeth: That was surprising, but it kinda makes sense - in witchcraft, what goes around really does come around.
Amy: How funny was Dean about the rabbit?
Elizabeth: hee hee.
Amy: Book club...of a very different sort. I don't really want a book club like that.
Elizabeth: Yeah, that's taking it a little far. Thank heavens all my book friends are ACTUALLY book friends.
Amy: Were you especially suspicious of Renee?
Elizabeth: YES. Immediately. She seemed like the evil ringleader right away.
Amy: Ruby again. Wants Sam to get out of dodge.
Elizabeth: Why does she keep helping them? SO confused...
Amy: So the witches get their power from demons. (duh)
Elizabeth: Well, that wasn't the biggest surprise of the night.
Amy: Dean is still concerned about Sam, but Sam is just trying to become like Dean.
Elizabeth: I don't think that had ever occurred to Dean before - he's so busy trying to protect Sam, the last thing he would ever expect would be that Sam would try to become like them.
Amy: Dean always seems to be the one getting beat up, doesn't he???? What a way to spend your last few months on earth. Thank God his teeth didn't come out. What was that crap Ruby forced down his throat?
Elizabeth: Yeah, his track record is not that good. For a tough guy, he spends a lot of time on the floor.
Amy: Okay I was surprised that Tammy was the demon. And she was pretty dang freaky. I wasn't sure they were going to pull out of that one!
Elizabeth: Well, she was my #2 choice for evil baddy, so I wasn't too surprised. However, when she stopped the bullet, I knew things were going to go badly. Tammy lets it slip that the demons don't believe in Sam anymore - now there is a new leader who wants him dead.
Amy: So how about demons used to be humans? I guess that souls are eternal in the Supernatural mythology...they either become completely evil, they linger as spirits, or they go someplace we don't yet know. (please let there be a heaven!)
Elizabeth: Well, that was unexpected. The demons are getting to be almost as interesting as the Winchesters. I'd really like some more exploration of the possible endings for souls - it seems like there is a lot there we don't know.
It's interesting that they are portraying hell as fairly close to the Christian belief - a place of torment, with a real fire in the pit.
Amy: Ruby admits she can't get Dean out of his deal, but wants his help to get Sam ready to fight the war.
Elizabeth: I think that's the one thing Dean really doesn't want to do - make Sam more like him. I'm still holding out hope that there's some way to get Dean out of his deal. And Ruby still remembers what it's like to be human.....wow.



Episode 10: Dream a Little Dream of Me
Synopsis:When Bobby falls into a coma and can't be awakened, Sam and Dean race to his side.

Amy: Bobby!!!!!!!!!!!! I was sad to see Bobby trapped in his dreams!!!
Elizabeth: Really scary, because Bobby is always the one who knows what's going on. Bad when he's the one in trouble. I hated the scenes where he was screaming for help!
Amy: Sam accuses Dean of not even wanting to save himself. Sam says something about what Dean is going to become. Do you think Dean told him about how demons used to be human?
Elizabeth: I'm not sure - he also mentions he's starting to think not even Ruby can save Dean, which means he obviously doesn't know everything Ruby told Dean.
Amy: So the whole sleep root/drug thing is pretty interesting. I pretty much yelled at Dean, don't drink the beer!!!
Elizabeth: Right - especially in the "I was only growing ferns" guy's room.
Best line of the episode -
Dean: I take it we believe the legends.
Sam: When don't we?
Amy: So....Sam's dream about Bella...pretty funny. Ha! (I like how they always play that sleazy music during the sex scenes)
Elizabeth: Yeah, the "Bowm-chicka-waw-waaaa" music is always a sign...
Amy: Did you trust she had pure intentions?
Elizabeth: Well, no. I don't think she ever has pure intentions. But I think Bobby saving her made her slightly more likely to help.
Amy: I thought that the story about Bobby's wife was just really really sad, and that he's so haunted by what he did to her. I thought Sam stepping out into Pushing Daisies land was weird as well. And I was touched when Dean revealed that he thinks of Bobby as a father. I think Bobby is a MUCH better father figure to Dean than John was.
Elizabeth: Nearly anyone could be a better father than John was. (Sorry, still don't like him.) I think Bobby has been there for the brothers much more than John ever was, physically and emotionally. His wife's story was tragic - every hunter has a tragic story.
Amy: Ugh not sleeping...UGH.
Elizabeth: Yeah, that would never work for me.
Amy: Dean didn't want Sam inside his head...I have to admit....how terrifying!
Elizabeth: Well, he's always had a lot he's hidden from Sam - now it's all going to be out there.
Amy: I was so sad to see what Dean's dream was...just to have a normal life...a wife and kid. :(
Elizabeth: Similar to when the djinn gave him his wish - he just wants a normal life. Amy: It's interesting because what's on the exterior of these boys is not necessarily what's deep down inside.
Amy: When Dean faced himself, I actually think he was able to resolve a lot of issues. Most notably that he doesn't deserve to go to hell, and he didn't deserve to be treated the way his father treated him. I thought the DVD extra about the evolution of this episode was really interesting. I think it ended up being just right, truthfully.
Elizabeth: That was an extremely powerful moment. There was something awfully symbolic about Dean killing that version of himself.
Amy: Bella is always up to no good!
Elizabeth: She never has good intentions - and now Dean might really kill her.
Amy: I'm glad he was able to tell Sam he doesn't want to die. But I fear there will be no way to save him. :(
Elizabeth: I'm so happy he is slowly but surely coming out from behind the walls he has put up. But you're right - I don't know that there is anything to be done to save him.

Tube Talk Tuesday: Supernatural Episodes 3.5 and 3.6

Every week Elizabeth and I discuss a few episodes of Supernatural. We're currently discussing season 3. Feel free to join in, just don't spoil us...and if you aren't watching, get thee to Netflix immediately.

Episode 3.5 Bedtime Stories
Synopsis: Sam and Dean investigate a small town that has been plagued by a number of strange murders resembling fairytales like Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Hansel and Gretel.


Amy: So this was pretty freaky featuring another creepy kid!!!
Elizabeth: Seriously, this show is making me rethink my parenting aspirations.
Amy: So Sam wants to go try to kill the demon who holds the contract but Dean says no. Do you think Dean says no because he really believes Sam could be hurt or because he really wants to die?
Elizabeth: I think it's probably a little bit of each. He's terrified of losing Sam, so can't agree to anything that might result in Sam dying. But I'm sure, even if he wouldn't admit it, the idea of laying down his burden has to be appealing.
Amy: The old woman with the pie was so creepy!!!
Elizabeth: I know - when I saw her, I knew immediately she was a baddy.
Amy: How funny when Sam said I'm thinking fairy tales and Dean was like, "do you think about fairy tales often?"
Or..."I'm going to stop the big bad wolf."
Elizabeth: Dean always has the best lines. Amy: So true, part of why I love him.
Didn't the adult Callie look like Snow White????
Elizabeth: Yep - I wonder if the actress had ever had that job at Disneyland. They certainly did a great job of laying her out in the bed. Amy: Well, she didn't have a long life on Supernatural, so if not hopefully she keeps that option open.
Amy: Dean says letting go is good advice, but Sam is unable to. He goes to the crossroads to try to break the deal. But someone more powerful holds the contract. Who do you think that is? Were you surprised he killed the demon anyway?
Elizabeth: Good advice that Dean obviously couldn't take himself. I think it could very well be Lucifer that holds the contract - he's been mentioned now, so he's clearly going to be part of the mythology. And I wasn't surprised when Sam killed the demon - I think he was always planning to. I'm worried, however, that killed seems to be getting a lot easier for him. Amy: Good point about Dean being unable to take that advice himself. But if any of the Winchesters could, it does seem it would be Sam.



Episode 3.6: Red Sky at Morning
Synopsis: Sam and Dean investigate the mysterious demise of drowning victims who were nowhere near water at the time of their death. The brothers learn that each of the victims saw a ghost ship shortly before they died.

Amy: A Ghost Ship!!! What fun! Well, until someone gets killed.
Elizabeth: I know. Something about ships always seems so romantic to me, even though I know the reality was anything but. It still always makes me grin, though.
Amy: Dean yells at Sam for going after the Crossroads demon. In some ways it makes sense that he's upset since the best lead is dead.
Elizabeth: Well, it was a pretty stupid move on Sam's part. He endangered himself, he used the colt, he didn't accomplish anything, and he killed the only thing that had any information. In this case, I think Dean's anger is justified.
Amy: How about that old woman going after Sam? Bleeeccchhh!
Elizabeth: HAH! That was HILARIOUS!! And I love that Dean thinks she's crazy, because she went after Sam and not him.
Amy: How about Dean hyperventilating over his car?
Elizabeth: I'm pretty sure he loves that car as much as he loves Sam. Amy: LOL, that car is a main character. Ooooohhh Bella! Were you surprised to learn that she was Alex?
Elizabeth: Yes, but also happy - even though she's a baddy, I really like her! Amy: She makes things really interesting. Sam's having a crisis over not being able to save anyone. Do you think he worries he won't have much value when Dean's gone? I imagine he has or will have some survivor's guilt. Elizabeth: I'm sure that's part of it, and the crossroads demon touched on that before he killed her. Also, I think he still feels like he needs to save as many people as he can to avoid his fate.
Amy: Dean in a tux.....pretty hot. He's always hot though. More icky scenes between Sam and Gert. Elizabeth: Yes, and the little James Bond music as he came down the stairs was great. And the best line of the episode was Dean to Bella - "Don't objectify me." HAH! Also, Sam in a tux was pretty easy on the eyes as well. Amy: Well yes, Sam is always hot, too! Why do you think I love this show? ;) Bella tricked them again...why do they always fall for her tricks? Elizabeth: Umm...because they aren't that smart? Seriously, for two guys who are supposed to know so much, they can be incredibly dumb sometimes. Amy: This is true. Makes for good drama, though.
Amy: (can't believe I asked this question)I thought Bella deserved to see the Ghost Ship...didn't you?
Elizabeth: Well, I guess we don't really know - she never told us what she did to cause the ghost ship to appear before her. And I thought the scene where she gave the brothers the money was interesting - Dean calls her damaged, and she says it takes one to know one. I think we'll see her again. Amy: I guess she tried to off a family member. I just have this thing about justice...like I was happy when she touched the rabbit foot, b/c it doesn't seem right to play around with this stuff and not face the consequences. Meanwhile, I think all hunters are damaged.
How about that scene in the car at the end? Sam just wants Dean to care. But I just don't think Dean's at the point in his processing yet.
Elizabeth: I think he is - I think he's absolutely terrified, and still can't admit it. I thought it was telling at the beginning that, even while he was yelling at Sam for going after the demon, one of his first questions was whether or not he was free of the contract. I think he cares more than anyone realizes, and if he admits it he's afraid he will break. Amy: You're probably right.

TV Episodes That Made Me Cry

It's a well documented fact that I love TV almost as much as I love books. And due to the laziness of summer, and the fact that apart from LOST I pretty much ignored TV for the past several months, and because my forthcoming collaborative TV blog isn't ready to launch yet, I've had a renewed interest in blogging about TV.

Now unlike some of you, I cry very easily. Extremely easily. Melanie asked recently if it was normal for me to cry during books, well, yes. Yes it is. Do I cry in every book? No. Let's get real, I have changes in my hormones throughout the month, I have different life circumstances, etc. But I do cry a lot. And not just books, movies. And not just movies, TV shows. And not just TV shows, blog posts. Yes, if you've written a moving blog post, I was probably sniffling away over here.

My tears are close to the surface, what can I say? And I have buckets of empathy for made-up people. Give me a hint of how they're feeling, and I'll share their tears.

Anyway, I thought I'd pay tribute to my favorite moving TV episodes:



LOST's The Constant
How could you not feel Desmond's profound longing for Penny throughout the series to this point? And how you could you not be moved to tears by the sweet life-saving reality that she was his constant and she had no plans to give up on him? Beautiful and touching!



Supernatural's What is and What Should Never Be

If I didn't love the character of Dean Winchester so darn much, this probably would not have been so sad, and if the writers didn't completely torture the Winchester boys all the time, it wouldn't have been such a tear jerker, but this episode tackled my favorite themes in a beautifully Supernatural way. Dean is attacked by a djinn who gives him a glimpse of what a normal life would have been like. I pretty much started crying when Dean said, "It's good to see you happy, Sammy." Because Sam's happiness is strongly tied to his own. Anyway, Dean must make the choice to leave the fantasy of feeling loved and secure and safe to choose life--full of war and fighting, loneliness, pain, and death. But yet rewarding in its own way--saving people. Great episode.



Buffy the Vampire Slayer's The Gift
Everytime I watch the last five minutes of this episode I get major goose bumps. And cry a little. I'm not saying anything else in case you've never seen the series!
(for the record there are many other Buffy episodes that made me cry!)



Angel's I Will Remember You

I'm not even a Buffy/Angel girl and this episode kills me. I just don't think there's anything sadder than star-crossed lovers! And the sacrifice that Angel makes...and the fact that Buffy doesn't remember oh the pain!!!!!
(and yes there are other Angel episodes that made me cry!)




LOST's The Incident
I don't care if you're a hard core Skater (Sawyer/Kate fan) there is just no way you could watch Juliet drop into the well and Sawyer grieve without feeling like your heart was being ripped out. Josh Holloway's performance is outstanding...and heartbreaking. I get major chills when I think of this scene.
(and yes for the record there are several other episodes of LOST that brought tears to my eyes...most notably Ji Yeon and also whenever someone dies)

Every Episode of Cold Case
Okay that's not true. But this show is really good at bringing home the senselessness of murder, the grief of a life cut too short, the pain of long kept secrets, and the waste of often reckless unintentional actions. Throw in a soundtrack of haunting time appropriate music and it's all over. Tears!

So those are some of mine...I know I've cried during Grey's Anatomy when I used to watch it as well. How about you? Can you think of any TV episodes that made you cry?

Tube Talk: Supernatural Season 3 Episodes 1 and 2

Every week, Elizabeth of As Usual, I Need more Bookshelves and I discuss several episodes of Supernatural. We are just starting our discussion of season 3.

There are no words for how much I love this show, and I've actually already finished season 3 (short season). I loved it. Anyway, here's our discussion of the beginning of the third season.

Episode 3.1 The Magnificent Seven
Synopsis: In the third season premiere, bracing themselves for the possibility of an apocalyptic war, Sam and Dean realize they have an enormous task: hunting down the hundreds of demons that escaped from the Devil's Gate.

Amy: I thought the huge cloud of black demons was pretty darned scary.

Elizabeth: That was one of the creepiest things I've seen on the show yet, because it just looked totally real up in the sky.

Amy: Clearly Dean is going to live by eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die!

Elizabeth: He doesn't really have any reason not to anymore, does he?

Amy: Did you like the new hunting couple? What did you think of their reaction to the Winchesters and Bobby?

Elizabeth: Well, I can understand it - I mean, the brothers did kinda let out more demons than have ever been free before. I keep getting the feeling that, in general, hunters don't really get along. Amy: Yeah they all think they've got it right. Ever notice how solitary it is?

Amy: I was not expecting that bar to be all demons!

Elizabeth: That was unexpected, although it I guess it makes sense that they'd have someplace to hang out.

Amy: Interesting that the demons were the sins, I found the demon explaining the similarities between humans and demons to be interesting.

Elizabeth: The first thing I thought of was the movie Seven, and then Dean quotes, "What's in the box?" - I cracked up. Amy: I thought of that as well! One of the creepiest movies ever.

Elizabeth: Once again, the writers show us how close the humans are to what they hunt - it was fascinating.

Amy: Who's the blonde chick???

Elizabeth: I don't know, but she has to be trouble - pretty girls around Sam and Dean almost always are!

Amy: Dean finally confesses that there is no way to stop him from going to hell, he made a selfish choice, and he's fine with it.

Elizabeth: In some ways, it must be a relief - he's always been under such a burden to save Sam. Now it's over - he failed. What's the worst that can happen, when the worst has already happened? Amy: Yeah, but gosh! Going to hell!!!!!

Elizabeth: Did you notice that the pride demon almost made it sound like the yellow-eyed demon had been protecting Sam from other demons? He said "Now you're fair game." Amy: I suspect the demon was protecting him....or at least all the other demons knew that Sam was sort of the chosen one and it wasn't a good idea to mess with him.



Episode 3.2 The Kids Are Alright
Synopsis: Dean pressures Sam into traveling to Cicero, Indiana, so Dean can visit an old flame named Lisa (CINDY SAMPSON), with whom he had a tryst nine years ago.

Amy: Soo...Dean continues his quest to enjoy his last days and heads off to find hot chick from the past. But...surprise she has a kid! :)

Elizabeth: Yeah, that was a great twist. For the first time Dean's confronted with the thought that there might be a consequence to his choice of lifestyle. Amy: and like...he hadn't seen her for 8 years! Why would he think she'd be like, woo-hoo, Dean!

Amy: Did you think that Ben was Dean's? (my gosh I thought that party scene was so funny!)

Elizabeth: I really did - they did such a great job of finding a little boy that looked like JA. Hilarious!

Amy: How creeped out were you by the kids? Why are kids always so creepy???

Elizabeth: Here's what this show as taught me - if there is ever something strange going on, and there happen to be kids around, it's ALWAYS the kids! They are totally creepy.

Amy: So the blonde shows up again and meets up with Sam and gives him a mission to find out what happened with him mom. Hmmm.

Elizabeth: She knows way too much about his family.

Amy: The close-up shot of the book The Historian. I haven't read it. Is it significant? (it's always kind of significant in LOST, so I wondered....)

Elizabeth: I'm kinda trying to figure that out, too. Amy: I caved and bought it. Hopefully, it's good!

Amy: I thought that mother had to be pretty darned sure that girl wasn't hers when she tried to drown her!

Elizabeth: Well, seeing the creepy reflection in the mirror probably helped. Amy: Still, she had to know that if her daughter did come back she wouldn't need that body....

Amy: I felt so sad for Dean at the end feeling he wasn't leaving anything behind. I think he'd make a great dad....so it's really too bad.

Elizabeth: I think, especially after the djinn gave him a taste of a normal life, he's a lot more open to the idea of a family and roots. I really think he was hoping Ben was his kid, and I think it's something he would definitely be open to. I felt bad for him when it ended up that he wasn't.

Amy: So what do you think was up with their mom? Were you surprised Ruby was a demon? How do you think she can help save Dean?

Elizabeth: I knew something was up with her, so I wasn't totally surprised. I still don't know that everyone should just run off and do whatever she tells them to. I have thought something was going on with their mom, ever since they showed the night she died, and she looked at the demon and said, "It's you". I just want to know what that something is!! If she can help Dean out of his deal with the crossroads demon, she must be pretty powerful, because I don't know how you can get out of that deal.

Tube Talk : Supernatural Season 2 Episode 21

Every week, Elizabeth and I talk about a few episodes of Supernatural. And every week I have a fail of some sort...fail to watch the episodes on time, fail to post on time, etc. I'm sorry, Elizabeth! I love you and this show! We are already at the end of season 2. Time flies when you love a show. Season 3 was cut short due to the blasted writer's strike so before you know it we'll be whining about how we can't get our hands on season 4. The things you have to look forward to. By the way we totally post with spoilers, just an FYI.

Episode 21: All Breaks Loose
Synopsis: Sam is abducted by the yellow-eyed demon and finds himself in a ghost town with children who have special abilities. They learn that the demon has brought them together to initiate his endgame: an all-out war against the human race.

Amy: OMG, this episode was like Heroes meets the Hunger Games!!!!!!!!

Elizabeth: I know - I thought the setup was brilliant.

Amy: What a creepy little town they found themselves in. Did you feel at all suspicious of Ava having been there for 5 months? How bout Lily's ability? I would have just wanted to die anyway, if I couldn't touch anyone.

Elizabeth: Yeah, Lily's ability was awful. But I can understand why the demon might want that for its army. I thought it was a little weird that Ava had been there for so long, but she seemed so completely innocent that I didn't imagine she had turned so heartless. Although, I suppose at some point your self-preservation instinct would have to kick in, so I can't say that I really blame her.

Amy: I knew the Roadhouse was doomed when Ash said he couldn't talk on that line. Seriously bummed about that.

Elizabeth: That was awful! The roadhouse was the closest thing the brothers had to a home, and now that is gone, too. And I'm so sorry to lose Ash! Amy: Me too.

Amy: I was kind of sorry to see Andy kick it.

Elizabeth: He had really grown on me, but I was happy it was him and not Sam. Amy: Oh just you wait. ;)

Amy: I was hoping Sam could kill that kid, but he couldn't. Sad times.

Elizabeth: I think it just showed that Sam is NOT, in fact, the killer that everyone tells him he will become. Amy: Sam is no Katniss.

Amy: How heartbreaking was Sam's death?

Elizabeth: That was really horrible. The despair in Dean's eyes was heartbreaking. I knew at that point that he was going to do something tragic to try to bring his brother back - it was his one job, and he failed. I had a pit in my stomach, anticipating what would happen next.

Amy: I love Dean. Just realized I hadn't gotten that in somehow this week, so I better take the opportunity. :)

Tube Talk Tuesday: Supernatural 2.17, 2.18

Every week Elizabeth and I discuss four episodes of Supernatural. Next week, though, we'll only be discussing two as we wrap up season 2. I love this show. It has already earned a spot in my favorites. :)

Episode 2.17 Heart
Synopsis: While investigating the death of a lawyer who appeared to have been killed by a wild animal, Sam and Dean realize they are actually tracking a werewolf.

Amy: I like werewolves more than I used to, but not this kind. They didn't even look like wolves at all!

Elizabeth: Yeah - I thought it was creepy that werewolf teeth looked so much like vampire teeth. I definitely have a soft spot for werewolves, though.

Amy: I knew immediately Madison was a wolf. It was all confirmed when she talked about her night of random violence.

Elizabeth: I actually didn't realize that right away - I guess Glen, the creepy neighbor, but not Madison. I'm not that good at guessing plot points, apparently.

Amy: I thought it was really sad that the wolves didn't know they were wolves. How tragic and what a terrifying ending for Glen!

Elizabeth: Well, I didn't feel THAT sorry for Glen - he was a creeper. But I did think that having then unaware they were werewolves was a cool twist.

Amy: I also was pretty sure that Madison couldn't be cured, but I was sad for Sam. It was clearly about more than his affection (and lust!) for her but his sorrow and struggle came because he saw his own situation mirrored in hers.

Elizabeth: Yeah, I had a feeling it wouldn't be a happy ending. It seems like now more and more Sam sees himself in the creatures they are hunting.

Amy: I became obsessed with Silent Lucidity when I heard it. I love that song and haven't heard it in years!

Elizabeth: I love the soundtrack for this show. They pick some of the greatest rock songs that always seem to fit so perfectly with what's happening on screen.

Amy: Great episode but a bummer with no hope for werewolves. Your thoughts?

Elizabeth: I really liked this one - of course, I say that after practically every episode. One of my favorite humorous moments was when Sam was left to guard Madison, and ends up getting drawn into her soap opera - very funny!



Episode 2.18 Hollywood Babylon
Synopsis: Sam and Dean travel to Hollywood to investigate the death of an actor on a horror film set, after rumors spread that he was killed by a ghost.

Amy: Answer me this, why when they have a movie in a movie or tv show in a tv show do they do that fake acting stuff???? I didn't think Tara Benchley could act at all. :)

Elizabeth: I know - I always wonder if it's poking fun just a little bit. I don't think it's a stretch to say that some of those "horror-porn" type movies are a little weak in the acting department. I wonder if this was before or after JP starred in Friday the 13th! Amy: Hmm, he's in that? Guess I should see it!

Amy: Lots of funny jokes in this one with the trip past Star's Hollow and the comment about the Canadian weather! (they film there) And then later on the Monster Truck movie poster (lamest Spn episode EVER)...did I miss any?

Elizabeth: The Monster Truck was hilarious!! I also loved the cameo by McG, who is the creator/producer of Supernatural, as the director of the horrible movie.

Amy: Dean is just too adorable for me with his whole PA thing!

Elizabeth: I know - he was just so happy having a normal job. And he seemed to settle into it so quickly.

Amy: The ghosts were pretty freaky!

Elizabeth: yes - and the deaths horrible! Getting chopped up by a giant propeller blade would be an awful way to go.

Amy: I wondered if there was more to that Latin than met the eye.

Elizabeth: Here's the thing - apparently, in this show, there is ALWAYS more than meets the eye. =)

Amy: Also a mention about new media and buzz...woo-hoo!

Elizabeth: I know!!! I'm choosing to believe that was because of us. =)

Amy: Do you think the writer was picking a bone with someone who had messed with their creation?

Elizabeth: I think that would be awesome if it were true. I would really like to see a revival of the old-school literary feud that writers in the 1900s used to do.

Amy: Kind of a goofy episode, but still fun.

Elizabeth: I liked this goofy episode so much more that Tall Tales - it was a lot of fun.

Tube Talk: Supernatural Episodes: 2x13, 2x14

Elizabeth and I are working our way through Supernatural Season 2 each week and we discuss 4 episodes a week. Join in!

Episode 13: Houses of the Holy
Synopsis: Sam and Dean investigate the murders of several people by individuals who claim they were visited by an angel and were carrying out God's will.

Amy: Okay I have to admit, I was like FINALLY. If you deal in darkness all the time there has to be an opposite, right? Barely ever mentioned on the show, and I was curious!

Elizabeth: I totally agree. I was so happy that the show acknowledged the other side of the coin, so to speak.

Amy: I found it interesting, the difference between Dean and Sam and Dean's inability to believe because he couldn't see. I found his argument that bad things had happened much more compelling. I also found Sam's desperation to believe sad...he so wants to be saved.


Elizabeth: Well, Dean's argument was certainly more logical - if there really were angels, there would be stories about it all over the hunter's network. I thought his recollection that the last thing their mom said to him was that there were angels watching over them was especially poignant. I was honestly shocked when Sam revealed that he prayed every night. I can understand why he's so desperate to believe - he's grasping onto anything he can think of to try and change his destiny. Amy: That's true about the hunters. Besides, wouldn't you think angels would be hunting the demons? And I thought demons were fallen angels!

Amy: Did you think it was angel or demon? What do you think about the difference between Sam and Dean and their belief? I loved the last scene where the roles had kind of switched.

Elizabeth: I don't that that it was an angel OR a demon - just another confused spirit. I get the feeling that being a spirit is a lot more difficult that it seems. I wasn't surprised by Sam's switch - I feel like he's just going to get one blow after another. But I was a bit surprised by Dean's. He was SO SURE that angels don't exist, so to see him entertain the possibility was kinda cool. Amy: Well, true. I also remember that the reaper told Dean if he couldn't let go, he'd become an angry spirit. So it IS complicated.

Amy: Overall, another great episode with significant character development. You?

Elizabeth: I thought it was a good one!



Episode 14: Born Under a Bad Sign
Synopsis: After receiving a frantic call from Sam, who has been missing for over a week, Dean races to his brother's side.

Amy: Well I guess it stands to reason that if people can be possessed so can the brothers.

Elizabeth: Oh, no no no no - I did not like Sam being possessed at all!!! I don't like it when they mess with my boys. Amy: In a strange slightly disturbing way, it did make Sam kinda hot though, he's normally so tortured.

Amy: This episode once again brought the conflict of Dean needing to save or kill Sam to the forefront, and Dean clearly said he'd rather die.

Elizabeth: I think it's clear that Dean believes he MUST save Sam. I don't think he will allow himself to think anything else, because he sees it as his true mission in life.

Amy: Also, Jo has a thing for Dean. Big huge surprise, I mean who doesn't.

Elizabeth: Well, of course - she's young, he's a sexy bad boy - it's inevitable.

Amy: Though I loved it when the demon referenced Sam's dewy sensitive eyes....so true!

Elizabeth: That was brilliant! Sam has the best puppy dog eyes!

Amy: That Bobby is a clever one and I was so glad he was onto Sam (the demon) so fast.

Elizabeth: I love Bobby. Jim Beaver is a brilliant actor, first in Deadwood and now Supernatural. I wish the boys would just keep him around permanently - I feel like they would get into less trouble. Amy: Never watched Deadwood.

Amy: Sam now has blood on his hands even if it's not his fault. Do you think this will complicate things?

Elizabeth: Well, I think it just reinforces his belief that he's destined to be a killer. I think he has wanted to believe he can "change" his destiny, but now this just makes him believe even more that he can't escape his fate.

Amy: Do you think the demon was telling the truth about Jo's dad?

Elizabeth: I'm never completely comfortable believing what a demon says, but I thought there was definitely a ring of truth to it. Amy: I think so, too, and John Winchester was a man that could do what was necessary.

Amy: I loved how Dean refocused Sam's attention on the fact that he could still save him.

Elizabeth: Their relationship is so strong - they both depend so much on each other. I can't imagine them without the other. I love the way they can always remind each other of what really matters, and what the truth really is.

Tube Talk on a Special Day: Thursday! Supernatural 2x9, 2x10

BEA is to blame for the disruption in all of my regular posting activities. And impossible to believe, but I've fallen behind Elizabeth in watching Supernatural again!

Anyway if you've seen the show feel free to chime in, just don't spoil us.

Episode 9: Croatoan
Synposis: When Sam has a vision of Dean killing a young man who seems to be possessed by a demon, the two brothers head to Oregon to search for answers

Amy: I should start by saying I thought this episode was brilliant. Despite the fact that he's so tortured, I sort of love a tortured Dean! Also generally like zombie spreading diseases.

Elizabeth: Yes, this was a good one. I think JA is so good at playing tortured Dean that I can't help but love him. (Amy again....yes we all know how I feel about Jensen!!)

Amy: How clever is this show...turns every mystery into the Supernatural!

Elizabeth: I know - I thought, Oh my gosh, now there are supernatural diseases!! Brilliant.

Amy: Sam's vision was pretty freaky....did you expect it to play out like it did?

Elizabeth: Well, ever since the shapeshifter episode, I worry that Dean will go off the edge and do something terrible. It just seems like he's SO close to the edge all the time. I was worried that this time was that time.

Amy: Did you think Dean would actually shoot the kid?

Elizabeth: I kinda thought he would, actually. I think both Sam and Dean are a bit like ticking time bombs, and something will eventually set them off.

Amy: Did you realize Dean was at the point that he just wanted to die?

Elizabeth: I knew he was having trouble, but I didn't realize it was that serious. I thought it was heartbreaking when he just wanted to stay with Sam and have it be the end.

Amy: Were you shocked by the ending? (like did you realize that kid was a demon?)

Elizabeth: At the beginning I suspected him, but by the end I didn't - it definitely surprised me!

Amy: What do you think happened to the disease?

Elizabeth: I don't know - maybe it was like Ebola, and just burned itself out in 24 hours. I was also really interested in the fact that Sam was immune - just like he's immune to the other "special" kids' powers. He obviously has some sort of supernatural immunity.

Amy: I hate that they didn't tell us what Dad told Dean..BUT I love that I'm watching on DVD. ;)

Elizabeth: I know - thank goodness I didn't have to wait a week!

Amy: And...my favorite line..."Dean that's not school, that's schoolhouse rock!" :)

Elizabeth: That's great one!

(Poor Elizabeth...I pretty just gave her a bunch of questions!)

Episode 10: Hunted
Synopsis: After Dean (Jensen Ackles) tells Sam (Jared Padalecki) what their father told him before he died, a distraught Sam sneaks off to Indiana without Dean.

Amy: So this is round bout where I say Supernatural is on a roll because I thought this was another stellar episode.

Elizabeth: Yep, another great one. And it furthered the "special kids" story arc, which I really like.

Amy: First of all, I was rather shocked by what Dad told Dean. And then kind of pissed. I mean, after giving Dean a lifetime of too much weight on his shoulders, he abandoned responsibility by forcing Dean back to life and dealing with Sam. And does he really think Dean would ever be capable of killing Sam? We just saw in Croatoan, that no, he won't, he'd rather die with him than kill him.

Elizabeth: I know - just another reason I'm not a fan of Dad. How could he put that on Dean's shoulders? And how does he not know his own son well enough to know that Dean would do ANYTHING to save Sam - he'll never let him die.

Amy: So Sam's ticked at Dean, Dad and life in general and takes off. So now I'm ticked at Sam. Why does he always leave when things get tough?

Elizabeth: Well, I don't think he really had a great example of conflict-resolution growiing up.

Amy: Sam meets cute girl who had forseen his death!

Elizabeth: I really like Ava! And interesting that there is someone who has the same power as Sam.

Amy: Were you surprised to see Gordon again? I think this really ups the stakes since it shows more hunters are going to be blindly after Sam.

Elizabeth: I had a feeling Gordon would come back to be a problem, and I knew he would be out for revenge. I worry, because this is just another thing working against the brothers.

Amy: I was happy to see them sort of make-up with Ellen.

Elizabeth: I like Ellen, so I'm always glad to have her in a story.

Amy: The ending was chilling didn't you think?

Elizabeth: Yes - I feel like things are really heading toward something bad, and I don't know how everything will play out, but I'm really worried for the brothers.

Tube Talk Tuesday: Supernatural Season 2, episodes 2x5, 2x6

I haven't actually thought about Supernatural for days so consumed have I been with BEA. But I can't wait to get back into it! By the way, I noticed, the seasons are currently on sale at Amazon for 19.99 so if you want buy them and catch up to us in time for season 3...ahem.

Anyway, here are our chats! Elizabeth's thoughts are in italics and mine are plain text. Don't forget to visit her blog for our thoughts on episodes 7 and 8.

Season 2, Episode 5 Simon Said
Synopsis: Sam and Dean meet Andy, a slacker who has psychic powers of persuasion that he uses to gain favors from people.

Sam's visions are back and I suspect they are getting more painful?

Yeah, you can tell each time he has one, it just seems to get worse.

I'm really glad I don't know anyone who can make me tell the truth! That's scary stuff!

Its interesting how each of the kids with "abilities" has just a slightly different twist on the psychic stuff. It would certainly make them more powerful if they ever decided to join forces. I also thought it was interesting that the mind control didn't work on Sam - maybe the kids can't influence each other, just people without powers?
It would certainly seem so.

And really could they have imagined any worse deaths for those people? Covering oneself in gasoline and lighting a fire seemed particularly bad.

Yeah, that fire was pretty horrific. It was clear that whomever was causing the deaths had some pretty serious hatred of these people.

Dean was really making me laugh with the truth telling and the way he abandoned the Impala! Must have been some serious power at work to get him to abandon his car!

That was hilarious! And the way you could tell that he KNEW it wasn't right, but just couldn't help himself.

So we have another set of brothers, this time twins one evil one good...foreshadowing? Or just a reminder that Dean and Sam are lucky to have had each other?

I thought that was an interesting twist. It certainly does mirror Sam and Dean, and the possibility that Sam might turn evil. But Sam has a huge advantage, which is that his brother won't LET him become that kind of monster. The brothers are certainly lucky to have each other!

Sam is grappling with what his abilities mean for him. Will they make him evil? Dean says no, but he does admit they're starting to scare him.

I think the most telling part was when he said, "In the right circumstances, everyone is capable of murder." He's done some stuff that he never imagined he would do since joining back up with Dean, so he realizes it's possible that something could happen to make him turn evil. Dean can't allow that to even be a possibility, because he so believes that he will be able to save his brother.

Also we learn they have no way of knowing how many others like Sam are out there...scary stuff!

Right - who knows how far this reaches? I think Sam and Dean are just now realizing how big of a task they have ahead of them.

Season 2, Episode 6
Synopsis: Sam and Dean investigate the brutal slayings of blond women from the same apartment building and discover that the demon responsible is the ghost of the country's first serial murderer, H. H. Holmes.

I was pretty happy with all the creepy going on in this episode...old building, ectoplasm...good times!

Yes, this one was a great haunted house. Although, the fact that those girls saw weird black goo oozing from their light sockets and didn't immediately RUN OUT OF THE BUILDING kinda drove me nuts.

Well it seems that Jo really wants the life of a hunter, but her mom doesn't want her involved.....there's obviously some history going on there.

I think even without the brothers involved, Ellen has already lost a husband to hunting, so her desire to keep Jo out of that life seems perfectly understandable. And I sorta get not wanting your cute daughter to run off with the Winchesters, too. =)

What did you think about Sam and Dean not telling Ellen that Jo was with them?

Well, I knew that was going to come back to bite them at some point - it always does. But I can understand that they would sympathize with her - I'm sure they've felt like their dad was overprotective and controlling before - and want to help her out.

I thought Dean's little speech to Jo about how she had someone who loved her enough to want better things for her was rather heartbreaking. The lives of hunters and their familes...not happy places.

Yeah, it's pretty clear that all children of hunters are damaged somehow. And I think it says a lot about Dean's relationship with his own dad - I'm sure he wishes his dad could have loved HIM enough to keep him out of that life.

As much as I'm into girl power, Jo did get on my nerves a little bit. I mean...what do you expect to happen if you crawl into a demon infested building?

Well, yes, the crying and shrieking was a little over the top. Honey, if this is the life you want, bad things are going to happen. You need to learn a better way to deal with it. Yes, you make the choice...deal with the consequences! It's like the people who stay behind in a tornado and get shocked when their lives are in danger.

The revelation at the end that Ellen blames John for the death of her husband and that Dean and Sam are just like him was interesting, but man did Jo's reaction bother me! I really need more details!

Also, I don't think Sam and Dean are exactly JUST like their dad. But yes, I thought it was a bit much - I can understand a revelation like that would be upsetting, but unless Ellen told her that John specifically set out to get her dad killed, I think Jo really overreacted. I mean, hunting is dangerous, and sometimes bad things happen. But I would really like to hear the whole story! Okay, you're right...they're not exactly like their dad...just that Ellen thinks they are!

Tube Talk Tuesday: Supernatural Episodes 2x1, 2x2

As much as I loved season one, I am really really digging season two. Sadly, I'm already halfway through, so these discussions are lagging a bit! I hope you enjoy!! Elizabeth's thoughts are italicized and I am in normal text!

2x1, In My Time of Dying
Synopsis: In the season premiere, Sam, Dean and John have been left for dead after the Demon plowed a truck into the Impala.

First of all, I'm really glad that I didn't have to wait through a summer to find out what happened after the car crash. Sam walks away relatively intact. Were you worried about the others?

Well, I guess I wasn't worried that one of them would actually be GONE - I mean, it's only season 2. The brothers have to be around for a while. But I was worried that the show might kill one of them off, and have them come back as a spirit or something - it seems like you can never be too sure with shows like this.

I was worried the instant that Dean realized he was out of his body. That is never good! However I had hope that there was hope since he didn't just cease to be. Do you think Sam's anger at their dad was justified?

Exactly! It was my fear from the cliffhanger ending coming true! And yes, I think if I was in Sam's place, I would have been very angry with my dad. See, this is why Dad's practice of keeping everything from the kids backfires - if he would have told Sam he had a plan to get Dean back, Sam wouldn't have had to run around yelling at him. Just tell the boys what's going on!!!


Did you realize that Dad was going to summon the evil demon? doesn't it seem really brave?

Are you asking me this question to force me to like Dad?? =) Yes, it was brave - I've never questioned his bravery. I just don't think that HIS goals are necessarily the best thing for the brothers all the time.
Ha, no. I'm not his biggest fan, but I don't think he's all bad. In fact, I'm really torn over his decisions and what they mean.

What did you think the ghost was at first...did you realize it was a reaper?

Well, a reaper made sense, in a hospital where people are close to death all the time. Yes. But if there really is some sort of reaper, I hope they are a bit nicer looking. That reaper made me think there's a good reason to fear death!

Were you suspicious of the girl right away or not?

I did NOT - that was a surprise. Sometimes I think I'm a little slow to pick up on clues like that. =) For what it's worth, I wasn't either.

What did you think of Sam and Dean's ability to communicate through the Ouija board? Do you think Sam was able to sense Dean because of his abilities?

I thought it was a great idea! I was actually a little bit surprised Sam couldn't communicate with him before that, but I suppose we haven't seen him able to do that before. I just really wanted Sam to realize Dean was there! Have you ever played with a Ouija board? I did once in junior high when most people do, and nothing happened. No one even pretended!

How did you feel about the Dad and son's last scenes? Whatever did he tell Dean? I was glad he acknowledged his failing as a parent.

Man, I was yelling at the TV - What did you just tell him!! I was happy that he could admit he wasn't the best parent, but I'm worried it was too little, too late. I don't know that Dean will ever truly believe his dad loves him. Seriously, who would lean over and whisper in real life! Contrived!

Loved this episode and thought it was extremely satisfying start to season 2. Poor Dad. :(

It was a great start to the season!!



2x2, Everybody Loves a Clown
Synopsis: After listening to a message on John's, cell phone from a woman named Ellen, Sam and Dean decide to track her down.

Clowns are always topping the list of scary things, so it seemed perfect for an episode of Supernatural, don't you think?

Yeah, clowns are just weird. I could never understand why parents would get them for their kids' birthday parties. I think the show does a good job of using the fears that normal people have, and making them much scarier!

I thought that little carnival was scary enough and the clown certainly didn't seem like anything I'd befriend!

Right - hasn't anyone ever told those kids not to let strangers in their house? Especially strangers wearing weird face paint?? I couldn't believe those kids just kept opening the door for the clown!

And my favorite lines from this episode - when Sam and Dean were giving each other a hard time about their respective phobias:

Sam - At least I'm not afraid of flying,
Dead - Planes crash.
Sam - And apparently clowns kill!!

What did you think of Ellen, Jo, and the bar? (even more hunters for you!) I was kind of glad there was a place with people who knew their dad.

I love Ellen, Jo, and Ash! I think these characters are a great addition to the storyline. I love that Ellen and Jo are strong and fiesty, and don't NEED any help from the brothers, thank you very much. And I think having someone who knew their dad will eventually be helpful for the brothers.

In these first few episodes, I've been most interested in how Sam and Dean are dealing with their dad's death. Sam seems a bit more keen to give up school for the life a hunter now. What did you think of Dean's reaction to that?

Well, I think he's torn - he desperately wants Sam to stay with him, but he also knows that it's not really that great of a life, and wants something better for his little brother. It's probably a little bit of relief, and a little bit of surprise that Sam would be willing to give up normalcy to stay on the road with him.

I have to admit I thought the ending of this episode struck just the right tone. Dean is clearly suffering and has no place to process his anger in a healthy way. Powerful stuff when he started hitting his car. :(

Yeah, that got me a little choked up. I worry that Dean will close up more and more into himself, because he has so much anger and guilt that needs to come out. And, of course, now he feels even more that it is his duty to protect Sam, so he believes he can't appear to be even a little bit weak. But Sam so wants to help!!

TV on DVD Review: Supernatural Season One

After the success of LOST in 2004, there was a whole slew of shows that tried to take off on similar themes in the fall of 2005. Supernatural was among them. I always knew I wanted to watch the show, but there's only so much time. I bought the season DVDs when I spotted them on sale and when I decided to start working my way though my To Be Watched pile, Elizabeth offered to co-review Supernatural with me. Since I'm watching the show alone, this is the perfect solution!

Supernatural is the story of brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, who were born into a life of hunting the supernatural--ghosts, angry spirits, demons, and the like. During the first season they are searching for their father, John Winchester who disappeared leaving behind nothing but his hunting journal.

I was admittedly captivated by the pilot of the show, which establishes the background of the Winchester family, portrays the estranged relationship yet affection between brothers Sam and Dean, and in conclusion sets up the mystery and provides the motivation for Sam Winchester to return to a life of hunting. But the episodes immediately following it didn't necessarily add to my desire to keep watching. I enjoyed them, but didn't feel like I needed to compulsively partake of the show like I have felt for shows in the past! That didn't happen until around episodes 14 or 15 and suddenly I was completely hooked.

The strength of Supernatural is the relationship between brothers Sam and Dean Winchester and the excellent acting of actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. While the ghosts and monsters that make their appearances in the show are sometimes unsatisfying, the developing characters of these two men is really what keeps me glued to the set. There is also an overarching mystery developing around what happened in the past and how it plays a role in the present, though that is only lightly touched on in Season 1.

I read someone describe this as Buffy the Vampire Slayer for boys and while there are certainly differences, I imagine the audience is much the same.

Recommended.

Episode 18: Something Wicked
Synopsis: Sam and Dean investigate a small town in Wisconsin where children are falling into comas for no apparent reason.

Being as I am team-Dean (a term that is brand new to me just learned on twitter!) I really loved this heavily character centric episode. In fact, it was probably one of my favorites. And reflecting back on it now, I think it's because this episode totally played out like an episode of LOST!

It was a very good episode! Is this the one that made you fall madly in love with this series? =) I think actually it was a few episodes before this one, but this one certainly didn't hurt.

I feel like this episode gave us tremendous insight into the character of Dean, his protective brotherly ways and why. I liked seeing Dean's relationship and feelings of responsibility towards Sam reflected in Michael and Asher.

I thought we learned so much about why Dean acts the way he does. He's been responsible for Sam since they were kids, and I think it made him grow up way too fast. I almost cried when the brothers were talking about their childhood, and Sam said he wished he would have had the innocence most kids had - Dean said, "If it means anything, sometimes I wish you could too." He doesn't even bother wishing innocence for himself, because he knows he's way past that, but he still wishes it for Sam.
Also - remember a few episodes back, with the lady in the mirror that attacked people with secrets? And I wondered if maybe Dean had a secret he wouldn't tell Sam? I think we found out what it was tonight - Dean left Sam alone, and he's felt guilt about it for years. It also explains why he always does exactly what their dad tells him to do, with no questions asked - the one time he didn't, it almost ended up in disaster.

Yes when Dean said that to Sam...man, I mean that's why I love the character so much!!! Yeah, you're right...lots of good insight into him...heartbreaking insight. ;)

Did you not find that boogeyman or whatever it was called to be uber creepy? I really was kind of freaked out by the hands!! Very scary monster.

Yes! I can't place what those hands remind me of, but it definitely gave me a flashback to something that scared me as a kid.


Did you think the old lady was involved initially? I thought she was ultra creepy!

I did - they really wanted us to believe it was her. Playing off the audience's assumption that an old woman would most likely be a witch was smart, I thought.

Were you surprised it was the doctor?

I was! I didn't see that coming at all.

What did you think about Dean's decision to use Michael as bait and Sam's reluctance to do so? Do you think Dean is willing to make the harder choices? (try to not to let the season finale influence your answer!)

I think Sam generally leads with his emotions, and Dean is able to have a clearer head. I think this allows Dean to do whatever it takes to get the result he wants. Of course, when Sam is involved, all his reason tends to go out the window!


Looking back, definitely one of my favorite season 1 episodes.



Episode 19: Provenance
Synopsis: A young husband and wife are killed in their home shortly after buying an antique painting of a family portrait from around 1910.

Okay, first things first - this was the BEST.HOTEL.ROOM.EVER.

The painting that kills...actually I thought this was creepy. I think there is something that is really creepy about paintings of dead people.

This reminded me of something at Disney Land - some sort of haunted house, with a bunch of paintings that had moving eyes. For some reason, I couldn't get that out of my head, so I was more amused than scared.


I guess I was thinking of the film The Others or The Haunting in Connecticut--of course those were both photographs.

But I have to admit, there wasn't much mystery for me, because I've seen Anne of Green Gables a thousand times....and so as soon as they said adopted daughter...I knew! (remember when Rachel warns Marilla about the adopted girl who killed the whole family?)

Oh my gosh, I didn't make that connection, but you are totally right!! Strychnine in the well!!

The idea of preserving the old toys was very weird to me as well. And making the doll out of hair?

I've heard of that sort of thing before - I think my grandma has something with hair - maybe a necklace? I didn't know they actually put those types of things in the mausoleum with the ashes, though.


What did you think about Sam and Sarah?

I like Sarah - she's one of my favorite girls-of-the-week. I liked her ability to think for herself, and she had my favorite line of the week - "You guys seem to be uncomfortably comfortable with this." I loved that line, too!

Were you happy to see Sam start to move on?

Well, I think it makes sense. Apparently, its been 6 months at least since Jess died - and I think moving on will help him. I thought it was interesting that this was the first time he's said anything about going back to see someone - maybe we'll see Sarah again?? Yes it would be interesting to see her make a reappearance!
