Let's Talk American Idol

I've been going back and forth on whether or not to recap American Idol this year. I had a blast doing it last year, but it's actually really time consuming and this year will be competing directly against LOST. Plus, I've been thinking of adding recaps for another show, though I haven't decided which one yet.

If I do start doing the recaps, I think I'll start when the top (12?) are determined. I'm not a huge fan of the format this year, I know a lot of people think this is a more even playing ground, but to me it just means we don't see some of the contestants for a few weeks, making it harder to bond with them. I think there's just no way to make things totally fair.

All that aside, I'd love your thoughts on last night's show. To be honest, while I thought a few of the singers were okay, no one really blew me away. You? Do you like this format? Do you like four judges? Let me know how you feel, also please weigh in on whether or not you'd like me to do recaps starting with the top 12.

I'm not sure if I'm going to do fully recaps or not either. I like the idea of waiting until the final 12. So, you know my opinion of the new format--AWFUL!! As for the four judges? I could take Kara or leave her. I really don't think she brings that much to the show. I have no idea why they brought her on (unless Paula is leaving?).

I really like Kara so I am a big fan of the four judges. But I HATE the new format. only three people from last night, it just feels too drastic and I don't like it at all. No matter when you start doing recaps I will be reading!
My sister and I both adore Anoop. I mean, how can you not?

You do a great job with the Idol recaps -- I'm a fan. :-)

But I have not felt very connected to the show this year at all. I think they've really focused on the "drama" element this year, and neglected the singing talent part. It seems like they're using more of the standard "reality show" formula than usual. I don't know, maybe they've become completely full of themselves, and of the massive pop culture phenomenon that they are.

Thus far, the talent has not seemed particularly noteworthy, especially if compared side-by-side with most of the previous seasons.

Well, you caught my attention off of iGoogle with this post so I would say YES! I like recaps. So far, not liking the new format. Paula seemed pretty normal up until last nights show when she seemed drugged or drunk or something.

So far...wasn't really impressed with any of the girls from last night...especially the skinny one who sang Sting. She made all those wierd faces. The first girl at at least had a cool personality.

The guys...I've liked Oil Rig Guy, Church Director Guy who just lost his wife, and Anoop. I take no time trying to remember names at this point. Oil Rig Guy and Anoop didn't do fantastic, but they weren't bad either. Church Guy did probably the bast out of the guys for me.

By the way...I'm not buying that Tatiana isn't nuts. She is a few french fries short of the happy meal.

By the way, I cant seem to use the WordPress username option on more than one blog. Am i doing something wrong or is it messed up?

I missed seeing your recaps last year, I would have loved them. I was so totally caught up last year that it was a little over the top! It remains to be seen this season if I get as into it, but I am interested to see what/how you recap things.

I only saw a handful of it last night, but I continue to love Danny and did a fair amount of voting for him. I also logged a few votes for Ricky.

I agree with Chaotic Hammer that they've really focused a lot on the drama this time around and I think many really cool people have slipped through the cracks.

I think waiting til the final 12 would be a good idea. Personally I wasn't all that excited last night. I haven't really "gotten into' the show yet this year. There was a lot of singing off key last night I thought...

I won't start voting till the final 12, so if you hold off on recaps till then it would be fine with me :-). But even before we get there, my husband has already picked Danny Gokey to win everything - and he called it for David Cook by the second week of semifinals last year :-). (BTW, does Danny remind anyone else of Robert Downey Jr., just a bit?)

So far, they guys are making more of an impression on me than the girls - except for Tatiana, who's making an impression for all the wrong reasons.

The new judge is okay. We only watched the 2nd half last night, and hubby made the comment that Kara said exactly the same thing that Randy did about the performances. She never said anything unique to her.

I wasn't overly impressed with what I heard. I like the Oil Rig Guy (Michael), but his voice isn't that impressive. For the girls, Tatiana has a good voice, but her personality is too weird and almost creepy. If she were to win, she'd be all over the tabloids on a regular basis! Ann Marie (sang after Oil Rig Guy) was great in my opinion, but judges didn't like her. And I have to agree that Danny should go far.

To me, the contestants this week are the ones that the show has focused the most on (drama etc.) so I really don't know who is left for the next 2 weeks! LOL

I think recaps can wait till the final 12. I'm not crazy about this new format at all. You take the top three but if there was someone else deserving in there instead they get booted. Not liking it at all.

I like Danny Gokey. Like Florinda's husband I've already picked him to win. lol. I could lose myself in his voice. The rest--truthfully I already can't remember them.

The judges-I could take Kara or not. She's ok. Simon seemed in an even worse mood than usual last night. lol.

I like your recaps! :-) I wish I could read the Lost recaps too but I'm working on catching up right now - I'm on season 2 and loving it!

It seems very reality show/drama to me - enough that it bothers me. lol But I'll try to stay on it.

I am not sure of the new format. I don't like that 1 male and 1 female have to go through then the 3rd wild card. I would have rather had 3 males go through after last night. I hate to see a good guy not make it because there has to be a girl go through. The 4 judge recap can get a little long, so as we go through the season, that may get old. So, it will be interesting to see who gets through tonight and how the following weeks go. Amy, you do what you feel you have time for and want to do. Nothing is fun if you don't enjoy it or want to do it!

I will enjoy reading your thoughts on Idol, so start posting whenever you like.

I always wait until Hollywood week to start watching. Although I liked the 3 who made it through, I don't think I like this new format.

Danny is my favorite by far; not only do I like his voice, but I like him personally. It would be nice if he wins the whole thing, but I just want him to go far enough to get his career going.

Tatiana - Although she has a good voice, I think she's there for the drama. Totally self-centered. I hope she doesn't win on the wild card.

Alexis - I'm not into blues music, but can appreciate that she did a wonderful job. Glad to see her go through.

Ok, I just finished watching last night's show and cheated to look for the three chosen online (advantage of being on west coast). I'm kind of disappointed because I liked Ricky Brady as well as Danny Gokey and Anoop Desai. Didn't like ANY of the girls although I love to see how outrageous Tatiana can be. Is she for real? Anyway didn't agree that Alexis Grace was all that great. So I think it could really limit and hurt contestants to have the votes for the highest girl and highest guy win because the good ones may only be guys or gals - does this make sense?

I agree there wasn't a 'WOW!' factor this week. I'm hoping next week will be better. However, i think that overall the contestants this year are really, really good.

I really liked Danny and (GASP!) Tatiana. I don't mind the 4 judges, but I don't like the format. I don't like how they eliminated SO many people last night. Plus, where are the final 3 going to come from? Top 12 has 3 coming from each of the 3 groups, but that only comes to 9 finalists. ?!?!

Hi Amy, I am a huge american idol fan!! I have not missed a eppisode since it first started. I hardley watch t.v. but that is the time people know not to call me because i won't answer the phone. Not sure i like this set up this year, since they can only pick 3 from each group. I was happy to see the last guy got threw last night he waas 1 of my favorites, he looks like Robert Downey Jr. Next week however there is actually 4 really good ones in that group so it'll be interesting to see. Glad we got you for the AI in the know lol!! : )

Hi Amy! I'm new to your blog, but I waned to add my thoughts. AI is my guilty pleasure (alright, ONE of them!) I agree with most of you -- I like Danny. But I think there are too many judges (and Randy never seems to say anything worthwhile). But yes, I'm sucked into it already...

This is my fave show and I would love to recaps. I am not real fond of the new format but in time I am sure I will adjust. Four judges? My verdict is still out on this too. Even though I love everything about the show, My fave part is not until it is narrowed down and we are watching the true competition. Can't wait!
