In Which You Help Me With My Job

Part of my job is coming up with simple explanations for words in the English language...using the English language.
Sometimes this is rather simple and sometimes it's not. Sometimes I spend five minutes describing a word and giving an assortment of examples and I still get a blank expression from my student.

So I have decided to turn to you...how would you describe/define horizon?

It's a line where the sky and land or sea meet. I have this as a vocabulary word for my second graders. If you come up with something better, PLEASE let me know!

Yeah, for some reason, that still totally confuses them.

will definitely let you know if I come up with something better!

sally and amy,

Just a thought but what about using a photo or drawing to show them what/where the horizon is visually?

Sometimes when I am confused seeing something helps it make more sense perhaps this would be true for your kids at school as well.

Good idea Melissa! I actually teach adults and sometimes I do hop on the internet and do an image search. Now I just need to find a good picture of horizon....

How about "the line marking the farthest land you can see from where you are"? That's lame, too, though.

hi Jim,
thanks for stopping by. No idea is lame when you're trying to communicate an idea I've learned...
