Film: Monte Carlo

The summer heat y'all.

Summer is the time for big blockbuster movies that help you escape your troubles and the heat, but this year the only really big film I seem to care about seeing is Harry Potter. I wanted to see Midnight in Paris but it flew out of theaters really fast, and while I enjoyed Super 8, I think it ends up being largely forgettable for me.

I have to admit that I wasn't all that interested in seeing Monte Carlo, because I was sure it was going to be nothing more than completely cheesy and for people much younger than myself. I have no idea who Selena Gomez is apart from some star from The Disney Channel. I love Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy but maybe not enough to see a bad movie for them. But one of my friends saw it and said it was actually pretty cute so in craving some escape from the real world I went to see it.

I ended up thinking it was the perfect summer movie in many ways. It's a complete escapist fantasy, the plot falls apart rather quickly if you give it any scrutiny, but it doesn't matter, because largely it's a movie about escaping from your life and finding yourself someplace totally different. It's charming and cute, offers lots of beautiful Paris, nice girl friendship moments, fun romances, and princess for a day fantasies. It doesn't try too hard to be funny which is something I hate. It's rated PG so it's free of raunchy humor as well. I don't know, I think if like me you're stuck forever in YA land, you might like this. And Leighton and Katie both look totally beautiful throughout!

So yes--perfect summer escapist fantasy, a great way to escape the heat. :)
