LOST Recap and Discussion: Dead is Dead

I have had a pretty crappy week. If you follow me on Twitter, you already know that yesterday I rear-ended someone on the way to work and today when I got home I had a flat tire. And that's only about a third of it.

So I was really looking forward to LOST tonight. Seriously, when you've had a bad day, there's no therapy quite like LOST. Because really, no matter what's going on in my world? At least I'm not stuck on a crazy time hopping island being chased by wisps of black smoke.

SPOILERS BELOW

Tonight's episode centered around Ben and his guilt for the death of Alex. When the episode opens, we see Ben at the camp with the others, meeting Charles Widmore for the first time. Richard Alpert reminds Charles that the island chooses who it chooses and throws the name Jacob around for the ooooh, ahhh effect. :) Then Ben is back in the present seeing Locke who is relatively calm. (resurrection does this to people, I think) Ben announces he's come back to be judged.

Ben goes about trying to plant seeds of doubt about John amongst the new islanders who are all very suspicious if you ask me. (what kind of answer is some stuff we need to get moved? why do they need to move anything?)

So...we see Ben and Ethan snatch Alex from Danielle. He mentions whispers!!!!!!!! We also learn later on that he was supposed to kill them both and couldn't...does this mean Ben has a soft spot after all? Maybe not, as Caesar meets an untimely death. (this ticked me off--he would have called me my friend Amy...I'm sure of it!)

I just realized I'm way too tired to fully recap this, so let's hit the highlights.

Ben banished Widmore for breaking island rules including having a daughter with an outsider. Hmmm. I thought it would be much more dramatic. Also, since Widmore was already leaving regularly what is the true meaning behind "leaving the island" It obviously doesn't actually mean leaving the island

Sun was told to wait for John Locke. She is rather disbelieving at first (it's easier to believe he hid out in a casket than was resurrected)

Penny is alive and well!!!! And Desmond is alive, though maybe not well. Ben faltered when he saw little Charlie which gave Desmond enough time to beat the living daylights out of him....as every LOSTie has longed to do since they learned who he really is!

John Locke is the first to be resurrected. It scares Ben. But why? Because he knows he's lost his power?

Smokey has a soft spot for Ben. Smokey, who comes from holes in the ground underneath a picture of an Egyptian goddess you can probably find on Lostpedia, examines Ben, manifests as Alex and informs him that he must follow every word John Locke says!!!

Now let's talk about those suspicious folks back on the smaller island who ask Lapidus "What lies in the shadow of the statue?"
WHAT?!?!? Who are these people???????

Personally, I'm really looking forward to the Miles centric episode next week. I just hope he doesn't die. I've been dying to learn more about him and his gift.

Tell me your thoughts on the episode below!

But is John the first to be resurrected? What about Jack's father? Or wasn't that resurrection?

And prior to Ben becoming in charge of the island, a lot of things were apparently different. Pregnant women didn't die. People came and went. I want to know how Ben changed things (besides killing the whole Dharma staff).

This was a good one! (I say that every week.) Ben cares for something other than himself. I liked that 'Alex' (is that really Alex?) threatened him. Really? Kill Locke again? Really?! Come on Ben that's getting old.

Poor Lapidus. He's in hot water. I hope he gets out. I like him even though he has no idea who he should stick with.

I wonder if Richard was resurrected and that's why he's ageless. What do you think?

I totally missed that you were in an accident. I hope you're ok.

Sorry to hear about your accident Amy. I haven't been in Twitter very much this week. I've been trying to get some work done.

Can you believe that I don't watch Lost. I feel like everyone does. My friend tried t get me into it and lent me the dvd of the first season and I fell asleep on episode 1 and never looked back!

I'm definitely looking forward to the Miles-centric ep next week as well.

And I knew you were in an accident, but I totally missed the flat tire! I'm sorry!

Sorry about your accident and flat tire. Glad you're okay.

I'm glad the "monster" didn't take Ben. I do hope they will explain everything about Charles leaving and Richard not aging and what exactly the temple is.

Next week looks excellent though. I love Miles.

Sorry to hear about your accident and crappy week. Hope things start looking up for you.

I didn't love last night's episode of LOST. I thought that the summoning of the smoke monster by draining the tub of dirty water and then the flashbacks at the temple were kind of cheesy. I'm really looking forward to next week's Miles episode. He has become one of my favorite characters.

I completely agree that the Ben/Widmore banishment thing seemed oddly anticlimactic...

Am I the last one to figure out that the smoke monster is manifesting as these dead people? Because it felt like a *huuge* revelation to me this episode, and now I have to suspect that I'm just a little slow... :P

Looking forward to clicking around your blog! :)

I am also looking forward to finding out more about Miles. The Egyptians definitely knew about the island because I took the picture above Smokey's lair to be the Jackal who judges you, like the Egyptian mythos. Plus when you leave the island you land in, I think Tikrit, which is in the neigborhood of Egypt.

Yea for Desmond and family.

Hope your today is better than yesterday :)

The producers have confirmed that Christian is physically dead, so, to comment #1 - if Locke is truly alive (but dead is dead, right??), then he is the first to be resurrected.

I'm sure Illana's group were hired by Widmore. The question is, what is their quest? WHY did Widmore want to get back to the island? If he liked his life off-island, what would be the big drive? Simple revenge?

Hmm..

I'm going to write about the yet-unsolved mysteries of Lost sometime today.

how did ethan get to be with the others? did ben save him during the purge? will we get to see a young Mr Friendly soon?

it took all my willpower to not twitter, Don't Worry! Penny's Alive!!!!

saw this on EW's recap and found it hilarious:

he Island's judicial system seems to me as muddy as the dirty water that filled that... well, what the hell was that thing at the end of the rocky corridor on the other side of Ben's glyph door? It was a basin with a stopper, but when Ben reached down to unplug it so he could yell down the drain, it suddenly became communication device. Part bathtub, part telephone, I guess you could say it was... a teletubby?

I don't think John is alive. I think he's still dead...as is Christian, but not Claire. It's all in my post.

Was Eloise the one who banished Whidmore? After all if they had a child (Charlotte) together she might be pretty mad that he has another family on the outside. I don't know if she ever had that much control on the island. Maybe she just snitched on him.

Ben is a sociopath so I never trust anything when it comes to him. The guy is a grade A manipulator. Can the smoke monster keep him in line? I don't know. It was definitely a better episode than the last few have been. It keeps me wanting more.

Jena...ah yes, still so many unanswered questions!

Chris..interesting idea about Richard having been rez'd. Hmm...I thought maybe he was sort of the keeper of the island.

Nicole..I can't believe you fell asleep during the action packed pilot!

Swapna and Alexa...yay for Miles!

Jen..I hate to say it, but I agree. I thought it was a bit hokey as Jena said on twitter. Hopefully next week will be back on track.

Sarah Eliza...ha, I don't know! I just remember it from Eko's storyline.

Jenny...yay for Desmond and family is right. :)

Kacie...you bring up an interesting question about Widmore. I really hope there's more to that whole story.

Deborah...lol about that quote! I really need some explanation on that thing!

Crystal...hmmm...but Locke ate a mango!

Petunia..interesting. Do you think you're more a fan of the mythology of LOST or the characters?
