Some Other Pop Culture Fun--Dollhouse, Shopaholic, The Fray

I have had a very stressful couple of weeks at work. The thing is, for three years the most stress I had was in dealing with difficult students. I didn't have things like deadlines and dealing with trying to design and implement my own training while launching a program that has nothing to do with what I've been doing, meanwhile still working with all the employees I was working with before.

I have an extremely low tolerance for stress so I'm adjusting. The thing is, yes, I know I'm so incredibly blessed to still have a job. We had another series of lay-offs this week. But I'm worried all of our bosses are going to take advantage of that mentality, friends. They definitely have the upper hand in this economy.

All that to say...I am so happy it's Friday! I feel that I have every single minute scheduled but at least I'll be able to do things that are.....fun! Kind of.

TV
And one thing I'm looking forward to is Dollhouse. Loyal readers (my favorite kind. ;) know that I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Dollhouse is created by the same Joss Whedon and stars Eliza Dushku (Faith from Buffy) I think Amy Acker is also in it (Fred from Angel). I'm kind of bummed, though, because early reviews aren't so good.

One of the problems I'm reading is that for a show of this nature to succeed it needs to be serialized. Networks don't really like serialized shows, though. They want shows like CSI or Criminal Minds....where you can tune in at any time without having missed anything. This is why the networks and I aren't best friends. My favorite shows at the moment? LOST. 24. Damages. Shows that demand loyalty and pay off in big dividends. Shows that by their very nature have smaller viewerships. (I'm just so thankful that LOST still has decent numbers!)

Something I'm unsure about is Eliza Dushku. I was never actually crazy about Faith. I know that puts me in a minority, but she kind of drove me crazy. So it will be interesting to see how all of that works out.

I'll be watching and hoping, but the fact that the show has been shoved to Fridays and that even the most loyal Whedon fans are in doubt..well...

Music
The other thing is....does anyone else like The Fray? I've been listening to the new CD and while I like it, I can't say it's really....captivated me yet. Not the way their other album did....

Movies
And lastly...Confessions of a Shopaholic opens this weekend. I'm pretty convinced that I'm not going to like it. But maybe if I totally forget that I ever read the book and loved the heck out of it, well I might.

What are you plans for the weekend? Will you watch Dollhouse? Have a hot date for Valentine's Day? Going to see Shopaholic? Tell me everything!

I'm with you on the 'take advantage' issue - more than one company in the UK has recently told friends of mine 'No, you can't have a cost of living rise ... but at least you still have a job' ... the companies aren't poor, just using it as an excuse to get their pound of flesh cheaper.

I didn't realise Dollhouse was on the horizon - now you've got me all excited! I dealt with last year's lab stress by re-watching the whole of Buffy on DVD. I love Joss Whedon. Look forward to reading your thoughts on Dollhouse (although, no doubt, it will be a while before it reaches our shores).

I'm going to watch a friend's daughter play basketball tonight. We're going to a movie tomorrow - right now I think it's going to be Coraline.

I don't deal very well with stress either and don't like change. i get so irked when I'm presented with last minute things (since i myself do everything like forever in advance when i can) so I'm trying to deal with it better and do less freaking out!

I'm very glad it's friday too! It feels like there is never enough time for anything and I'll be freaking out about that come Sunday morning, but for now I'm happy!

It seems that my life is one big stress fest lately. And this economy has pretty much everybody on edge. Hang in there!

I don't think I'll be watching Dollhouse. The previews creep me out. I may have date for Valentine's Day... if I plan it... and who knows how hot it will be. For movies, I'll think I'll campaign to see Coraline this week, but I don't know if I'll have any takers to go with me. And The Fray? Maybe I'll check out the first album and see what I think.

I hear you on the stress issue. I sometimes completely freak out and go into a panic mode when faced with stressful situations.
As far as "Dollhouse" goes, I am somewhat obssessive about the right cast when it comes to watching any movie or TV show, I do not like Eliza Dushku as the main character at all, and mainly it is the reason I will probably not watch the show.

I have seen so many people talking about this Dollhouse show... I am not a huge tv fan, so I hadn't even seen a preview, but now everyone has me curious!

I'm excited about Dollhouse as well, and I'm enjoyed The Fray's new album too! I think I'll probably wait for Shopaholic to come out on DVD...

Oh, and I only watched through S4 of Buffy, but I wasn't a big fan of Faith either...but from what I've heard she returns to the series after S4.

After hearing everyone talk about Dollhouse I had to watch it tonight...mixed feelings...I loved Angel...so I thought I'd like it...we'll see if it grows on me.

As for this weekend, samo samo on this end. Although we did just get a huge 52" flat screen here in the activity room...might have to find a good movie and go down and enjoy it!
