Christmas is here!

My student announced this to me two weeks ago, and you know she's right. The stores have begun displaying their Christmas offerings for the year, it rained in Southern California today, Hallmark has debuted all of their ornaments, the Christmas cds are releasing (Sarah McLachlan next Tuesday, anyone else excited?), and I myself broke out the Christmas cds.

I have a lot. I have a little bit of a passionate love affair with Christmas music. It doesn't even matter who is singing, as long as they are imparting their festive cheer. I probably have as many Christmas cds as I have other cds. Okay, fine that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I do have a lot. And I like to start listening in September or October. That way, there is plenty of time to enjoy it!

What about you? Are you a Christmas music enthusiast or do you dread the first notes of "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas?" Do tell. What are your favorite Christmas songs and your favorite versions of those songs?

I love "Welcome to Our World" too! It gives me serious goose bumps and fills me with wonder and delight every time.

I have sort of a love-hate relationship with Christmas music. I love the songs, from the classics to the more recent. Two of my favorite recents are 4Him's "Strange Way to Save the World" and "In the First Light" from Glad. The hate part comes from the fact that the nature of Christmas songs that get lots of play time every year, that they are memorable, kills me.

I find myself humming Christmas songs in July, for no reason, with no connection to anything. It just popped into my head. Now just imagine someone like me, who gets songs in his head and can't get ride of them short of electro-shock therapy, hearing a "memorable" song repeatedly. The word insanity comes to mind.

To sum it up: love the songs, hate hearing them on the radio for two to three months. Give me a week of the songs getting airplay, and I'm full-up for the year.
