What I Want to See on TV

Once upon a time I asked for suggestions about what to write about and now I'm digging back into those as inspiration hits!

This particular question...what I would like to see on TV, or what sort of shows I'd like to see get made kind of stump me in general. I like a wide variety of things and almost anything can be my kind of show with good writing and interesting characters. Yet, on the other hand, I can be known to complain about how what's coming out is most definitely NOT my kind of thing.

But there is something I'd love to see, especially after finishing Orange is the New Black, a show I mostly liked, but the last two episodes grated severely on my nerves. Orange is the New Black takes a very cartoonish approach to religion (which honestly kind of surprised me for a prison show, idek), and as if that wasn't enough, through the protagonist also managed to dismiss and talk down to the idea of faith. (if she'd been talking to characters who had been given any shading or sympathetic POV this really would not have bothered me at all but as was just really annoyed me.)

I'd really love to see a show where faith is treated as an integral, important, respected, real, and valid part of a person's life. In an ongoing way. I wouldn't say that characters of faith are one hundred percent absent, but shows that have attempted it in the past ring so hollow to me. Seventh Heaven andThe Secret Life of the American Teenager were dreadful. In other cases, religion is used as a throwaway joke or for jokes of characters. I know there's an uneasy feeling in our culture in general when it comes to religion. And the funny thing is that I'm of a Christian faith which is the majority in this country! Whatever I do get is probably more than others feel they get. (although when I say character of faith, I'd really be interested in all faiths, not just Christian, it's just easier for me to judge if I think Christian characters feel right to me) Also, I'm not saying there isn't a place for stories about religious fanatics or anything, I don't exactly know how to explain it, I'm fine with those stories existing, there's just a lot of them.

The Good Wife and Switched at Birth both have had semi decent representative Christian storylines. Nikki felt pretty typical to me and I've really liked some of Grace's moments much as she annoys me.

The best recent example I have is Tawney on Rectify. I feel like the show really got Tawney, they understood what motivated her and her worldview. I can't go into it too much without spoiling this show, but I don't feel like she was ever judged, just honestly and authentically portrayed. It's like...I didn't feel like the show agreed with Tawney, but I don't think they disagreed either, she was simply allowed to fully exist.

So anyway, that's one thing I'd like to see. There seem to be a few shows in various stages of development about faith, but none of them scream to me...WE ARE GOING TO BE AWESOME. Who are your favorite characters of faith on TV?

Otherwise, I'd really just love more contemporary drama. I like high concept shows, but I don't need every show to be that. I like family dramas and teen soaps, and spy shows. I like shows with great characters.

How about you? What sort of TV show would you like to see?
