24 is Back!

Did anyone else watch the first two hours of 24 season 7 last night? (or were you all watching the golden globes?)

Man, is this show back! I have to admit I was worried. Season six was, well, weak. 24 started to show it's age that season, the tricks were all the same and the believability stretched so far that it was hard to stay interested. The television movie back in the fall did impress me though and gave me hope. And tonight's first two hours were action packed and suspenseful in a way only 24 can do. I think moving the action to Washington D.C was a smart choice. I can even buy a living Tony Almeida, although the explanation still sounded a little fan fiction-y to me. Needless to say, the hours slipped by quickly and left me feeling happy this show is back and looking forward to tonight.

In other news, another show I was worried would be unable to reinvent itself also turned in another strong season premiere...Damages. Does anyone else watch this? If not, I highly recommend the first season. It's got fantastic writing and does time jumps all over the place, giving you only snatches of the truth, until the end when the whole is finally formed. The first season felt like the full story, so I wasn't sure if a second season would work, but they've definitely got me interested!

And lastly, I just checked to see who won at the Golden Globes..I'm glad to see Mad Men win...either though I haven't seen season 2, that show feels like the richest thing on television. (no worries, LOST is still my favorite.) Kate Winselt also cleaned up! I mean was it necessary to let her sweep it like that? And admittedly I'm puzzled by Vicky Cristina Barcelona winning best comedy or musical. I thought that film was pretty forgettable.

So what did you think of 24, Damages, or the Golden Globes? I guess I'll have to check out Slumdog Millionaire...what it is about? Oh and one more question...should I read Revolutionary Road before seeing the movie? Thoughts appreciated!

amy,

i watched the golden globes because i am one of the 5 people on the planet who don't watch 24 or lost... i know, i know. so, anyway... the show was really pretty boring. kate winslet was the highlight for me and i like laura linley. i liked renee z's dress even though the press is giving her a hard time. i think glenn close made herself look too old. susan saradon, however, looked good in her pantsuit. eva mendes' bangs drove me nuts. colin farrel was too much for me. mickey o'rourke was... well, not my taste. he'll never be as hot as he was in 9 1/2 weeks.

anyway... now, i am dying to see the reader and read revolutionary road.

best,

sher

Amy-

I watched 24 last night and thought it was good too. I HEART Jack Bauer!! I couldn't help thinking, Jack can't even appear in court without being dragged into some case. Geez... I don't know about Tony being alive. I found out prior to the show opening, so I wasn't surprised. Like you, I think the reason is weak. And where's Chloe?

Damages is the 2nd show in January I've waited for to return. Last season was great and so far it's really good.

Finally on January 21st, Lost will return. I just want to know how will Ben get everyone to return to the island. And how exactly did he make the island disappear? Hopefully we'll learn more about the black smoke. I have so many unanswered questions from last season and I know when this season starts I'll have more to add to my list!

I skipped over most of your post in case there were 24 spoilers (I have to wait for the DVDs to come out) but I just wanted to say how thrilled I am for Kate Winslet winning at the Globes. :)

Yes, I thought the same thing - Now THIS is the good old 24 I used to know and love! I was very happy with last night's premiere, and I'm really looking forward to tonight's episodes.

The Golden Globes were awesome. My girl Kate won 2 awards- what's better than that? :-)

We all watched 24 and will tonight too. So far this season looks good, but I'll reserve any final judgment until the end. We've also been watching season 4 of Lost and are really looking forward to the new season of it the most.

Love Damages! I too was a little concerned about the new season, but they seem off to a strong start. 24...well, I started watching it las season because I had heard so many good things about it. Maybe it was a weak season or maybe I need to get the DVDs and start at the beginning, but it did not grab me. I did watch last night's 2 hour episode...sort of. Not with 100% attention maybe.
And I too can't wait for Lost!

All I have to say is thank goodness for Tivo!

I don't watch 24, but I have to say, how stupid to put the premiere up against the Golden Globes! I wonder if they got all that much attention...

See? I get all my cultural news from you! I was away last night and have been so busy catching up with work that I never checked for the Golden's news. Kate W took it all? Was she wearing a great dress at least?

I turned 24 off last night and I watched the Golden Globe for about five minutes.

The only thing I can comment on is 24. I must have thought the same thing about last season as you did. I was dreading it coming back, DH was going to make me watch it whether I wanted to or not. But, it was great!! After two hours I wanted more!!

Sheri -- you must catch up on LOST on DVD! :)

Shon -- I'm glad to see we like a lot of the same shows. Who do you think was on the other end of that gun in Damages?

Lenore -- I don't think I spoiled anything but I am happy for Kate, though I'm all about everyone getting a chance.

Travis -- glad to know you also enjoy 24!

Marie -- glad you enjoyed it!

Lori -- oh me too!!! I can't wait!!!!

Sally -- thank you so much!

Deborah -- Go catch up on 24!

Caite -- last season was definitely the wrong season to try watching 24...I recommend starting from the beginning. I'm glad you like Damages, too! Who do you think is on the other end of that gun?!?

Thomas -- why did you turn off 24?

Beth -- I guess I'm in the minority of wanting the award love to go around, but Kate is definitely deserving. :)

Stephanie -- wasn't that awesome!

Susan -- yes, what a relief. :)

"Slumdog Millionaire" is about a kid in India who is on the TV program "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" He has answered all but the last question before the program ends for the day, so has to wait for the next day to try to answer the last question. The host of the program is convinced he's cheating, so he has him tortured to find out how. Turns out, every question he was asked triggers a memory from his childhood, growing up in the slums, and that's how he knows the answer. It's an interesting concept, but the movie itself is okay at best, and nowhere near a great film. I have no clue how it is winning most of the awards this year. It's plot is pretty contrived, and the use of flashbacks really annoyed me. Definitely the most overrated film of the year.

Stephen...it does sound interesting. But if you don't recommend it, maybe I'll give it a miss.
What would you have liked to see win?

I love 24 and this season is shaping up to be as good as Season 1. It is the fastest hour on television.
