Discussion Question: What Kind of Blogger are You?

In case you didn't know, I'm a fly by the seat of my pants kind of blogger. I have tried tried tried to write posts out in advance (like some of you do) and get it all over with one day a week and just have them post automatically, but it simply doesn't work that way for me. I work best under pressure, though I don't necessarily write best under pressure. (sorry for all the typos!)

So I had to report for jury duty today and then went out afterwards so no time to write the kind of review Andrew Peterson's latest deserves or the other kinds of reviews that need to be written or the other posts I've had cooking in my brain for awhile. I can barely keep my eyes open for this! Luckily, the trial I'm serving on is super short and we should be done tomorrow. (thank God!) Then you will get inundated with posts! Lucky you!

So this brings me to the question...what kind of blogger are you? Are you a carefully schedule out all of your posts in advance kind of blogger or a go with the flow kind of blogger? (me, me!) Please comment! Coming home to lots of comments will quickly erase the pain of jury duty. ;)

I'm a go with the flow blogger, for sure! Though, if I get on a roll and write 2-3 reviews all at once, I do save them up and post one each day.

I hope the trial is interesting, at least.

I'm both. Mostly go with the flow, but halfway through the week when I get my burst of creativity (and my one day off during the week) I sometimes structure and organise a few posts for later on in the week.

I'm a structured blogger! I give myself four days a week for reviews and when I finish a book, I tend to review it immediately but put it in the next slot to be posted later. I make exceptions for books with a release dates and sometimes move all the scheduled books around so a book can be reviewed on its release date. All of my meme posts are done on the day, though.

Completely by the seat of my pants!

I go with the flow, what else? Sometimes I'll have an idea for a future blog or there'll be some point I want to be sure to cover in a review, and then I'll start a draft. But the draft is usually no more than a few words just to remind me of the idea.

Do people really write seven blogs in one day and then schedule them to post? That would quickly erase all the blogging joy for me.

Go with the flow here. I have certain things I do on certain days but I'm not so organized to do it all in advance. It's rare that I'll schedule a post for later.

I'm definitely a pantser when it comes to blogging. I couldn't bring myself to write and schedule posts even if I wanted to - I just lack that kind of organization. :-)

I try to have some posts planned in advance. My husband keeps asking me if I feel pressure to read when I see my TBR pile and I tell him no, that I feel more pressure about planning my posts. Isn't that dumb?

I am definitely a seat of the pants. Sometimes I'll have a burst or finally have time to sit down and write my reviews and want to post them all that day. Cause that's when I wrote them and I need feedback! LOL Sometimes I will try to push a couple off to the next couple days so it's not feast or famine on the blog. But that doesn't usually happen.

Good question!

I go with the flow too. Sometimes if I am on a roll I'll go ahead and write more posts and then schedule them, but that doesnt happen very often. I schedule my book tour posts if possible, though.

I'm a combination. I use the calendar on my email account to keep track of ARC release dates, and that guides my reading & blogging for those books, so I have a pretty good idea of when I'll be posting. If I know I'm going to be away for a day or two and I have a chance to write posts in advance, I'll do that, but it doesn't happen often. I guess the simplest explanation is that I plan my book review posts, but everything else is kind of spontaneous based on what's going on in Book Lady Land. Good question!

Amy,
I'm just like you. I read all the other blogs that I know are planned out well in advance, but where's the time? Not in my schedule these days it seems. I love to do the Tuesday Teasers, Poetry Friday and things like that, because then at least I know what I'm going to blog about that day. Many times at night, I write my reviews and send them all at once, which reminds me, I haven't done one this week; oh well. Maybe I should become a planner; is there hope?

I usually don't plan my posts. However, I am one of those bloggers that don't post unless I have a review. But I am joining in on Tuesday Thingers, Tuesday Teasers, etc. so that I have something to blog about besides reviews - LOL. I do run two blogs however - one for reviews and one for all my challenges.

Oh definitely go with the flow! Which is why my posts that go with certain days are sometimes posted early in the morning the next day! I keep thinking I'll get organized enough to prepare posts in advance, but it hasn't really happened yet!

You know my feelings on scheduled posting! I pretty much post when I feel like it, which usually is around three times a week. Amy, I don't know how you post as much as you do, with all the work behind it (reviews mean reading), and still maintain a life. Or, maybe that's a poor assumption?

I'm both. I used to be a "post whenever you like" blogger, but I started writing reviews the night before and scheduling them to post the next morning. Then I started reading more, so I started getting ahead in my posts. Now, all my reviews are scheduled (my other posts are still spontaneous), but only because I like to write a review right after I read a book.

My reviews are generally written in clumps, between two and four at a time. Sometimes I will schedule my reviews a week or so in advance, but other times I will simply go into my draft posts in the morning and decide which review I want to post today. I don't like having a bunch of reviews post at the same time, and when I see 2 or more reviews from the same blog back to back in my google reader I will usually only read one of them at the most and delete the other (unless it is one of my absolute favorite blogs). Other posts go up whenever I happen to write them.

I go with the flow for the most part. If I end up with several reviews at once I'll sit down and write them all out and schedule them. I love the scheduling feature.

I'm definitely a "fly by the seat of my pants" type blogger, though we try to pretend that isn't the case on our book blog. We have a schedule we stick to for the most part, but sometimes I'm typing out a review up until 30 seconds before it's supposed to be posted. But shhh..that'll be our little secret.

On my personal blog I can't write blogs ahead of time to save my life. It's all about the spontaneity. Or that's what I'm telling myself anyway.

I am both. I do interviews on one blog and that is ready to go until April of next year. On my other blog it's a toss up. I sometimes schedule some and I sometimes don't. Something will just come over me and I have to write a blog right there and then.

I usually write my posts ahead of time and schedule them, although that generally means that the "daily" memes like Tuesday Thingers and Booking Through Thursday don't show up on the appointed day of the week (I do a meme roundup post on Fridays). I've found that to be the easiest approach for me, since I'm working my blogging in around family and a full-time office job. Sometimes I'll put up something on the fly - but sometimes those things just end up on Twitter instead.

Alyce said...

I'm a little of both. I like to get ahead, but somehow even with posts scheduled I still have posts that I need to do at the last minute. I totally hear you on the typos! I posted the other day when I was not at my best and when I went back to the post I couldn't believe the typos I'd missed.

I think it depends on my mood. =) Sometimes I'm a fly by the seat of my pants and other times I do 2 or 3 days of posts in advance. I like doing them in advance but sometimes just don't have the ideas (or the time).

Serena said...

I think I'm a combination of both! I often write posts on the spur of the moment and I have planned some out in advance.

Mari said...

definitely go with the flow. I don't think I have ever scheduled a post, though it does sound tempting.

I write blog posts daily, usually the post for that day. But when I get an idea for a post I write it immediately and save it as a draft for those "blog block" days when the inspiration just isn't there. I've tried pre-scheduling posts, but the danged Blogger outfit just can't get right wit dat. Soooo, I just post everyday, using saved drafts when in a rush or out of ideas.

I try to post 2-3 times a week. If possible I like to be one or two ahead, but that rarely happens. I am still reading the book I hope to blog about on Friday!

I have so many deadlines and schedules in the rest of my life, I sure don't want them in my blogging life!

I try to post at least twice a week, but I have three blogs, so that doesn't always happen!

Good luck with your jury duty!

Wow, looks like most of us are on the whim bloggers. I do schedule some posts just to be clear but usually once I've written something I want some reaction! :)

Euphrony..LOL!! If I had any other job, it wouldn't be possible. Plus, you must consider I'm single and very single at present...So yes I have a life outside of blogging and reading lately I just haven't had the time to write about it.

Florinda...I really like the way you do memes and I might steal it at some point. I just always feel like there's so much I can be blogging about and so little time!

Jen...I know. I just feel like I'm always behind on getting reviews up.

Mostly pantsers here! Joining the crowd, though I tend to wear dresses and skirts ;). I always get my tour posts done on time, but reviews are often behind time. I have 3 kiddos, what can I say? glad to know I'm not the only one! Poor PR folks...

I'm a schedule person in general and moving toward having more of a schedule with my blog.

As far as posting reviews goes, unless the review is part of a tour, I just post it when I write it. Well, actually I schedule it to post early the following morning, but same thing basically.

Jury duty...yuck!!

I'm a fly by the seat of my pants blogger, too. Whatever catches my fancy or is interesting to me, I'll post. I'm easily amused and I love to share. *g*

Great question! I think I'm a blend of the two. I really try to get my thoughts down ahead of time (I've got a husband and an almost-two-year-old boy, so they keep me busy!!) as I may not find the time to participate in some posts if I don't (memes like Tuesday Teasers, Mailbox Monday, etc).

I also like my reviews to be similarly structured, so I do tend to work on them ahead of time, then go back and tweak as the mood strikes.

That said, I try to do last minute posts too, although I'm more likely to do that in the comments of other bloggers posts (like yours!).

I like to have a schedule, though I'm not always successful. There is definitely a review schedule when there's a virtual book tour date. Otherwise, I try to post reviews as soon as I finish a book, but I like to take a day or two to think about the book if possible. I'm still trying to catch up on reviews of books I read earlier in the year before I starting posting on a more regular basis. Well, I guess that way, I'll never run out of things to discuss. ;)
