What's Your Favorite Hymn?

I think it's fun to discover old music and rediscover old favorites. What is your favorite hymn and what is your favorite line from it?

  1. I have two favorite hymns.
The first is The King of David Comes more for how it sounds than what it says. I was just reading that it is supposed to sound like an Israeli folk song. And also saw a video of Stephen Colbert dancing around singing it.

I am sharing the lyrics in full:
The King of Glory comes, the nation rejoices
Open the gates before Him, lift up your voices.

Who is the King of Glory? How shall we call Him?
He is Emmanuel, the promise of ages.

In all of Galilee, in city or village
He goes among His people, curing their illness.

Sing then of David's Son, our Savior and Brother
In all of Galilee was never another.

He gave his life for us, the pledge of salvation,
He took upon himself the sins of the nation.

He conquered sin and death; He truly has risen.
And He will share with us His heavenly vision.

  2. My second favorite is "On Eagles' Wings" (at least I think that is what it is called.)

    Here is the refrain:
And He will raise you up on eagle's wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.

I always have loved the refrain, even though I love the whole song. I always see this part in my mind. Also they sang it at my father's funeral so I often think of him being lifted up to Heaven.

  3. "Come Thou Fount"

"Oh, to grace how great a debtor, daily I'm constrained to be.
Let Thy grace, Lord, like a fetter bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it; prone to leave the God I love.
Here's my heart, o, take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above."

this is just some random guy singing without music but it gives you a good sense of the song.

  7. I've got several. Here are a couple of my favorites: "And Can It Be", "Come Thou Fount", "Great Is Thy Faithfulness". I blogged about what is probably my very favorite early in my blog days - "The Old Rugged Cross" - but most people probably haven't read why.

  8. Wonderful the Matchless Grace of Jesus.
It's not the words I liked so much but the harmony sung by the congregation. I haven't heard anyone sing it for 20 years I suppose, since it doesn't fit the classic hymn bill nor is it anything like modern praise and worship.

I also still love the catholic hymn "Be Not Afraid", and sang it with friends recently.

me too! I love the way that song (Wonderful the Matchless Grace of Jesus) is sung! I don't know the other one, though.
